Selections from India
These works grew out of repeated periods living, working and studying yoga in India. Encounters with people and places unfolded alongside an immersion in yoga philosophy, the inquiries of J. Krishnamurti and the writings of John Berger and James Hillman.
Drawing became a place to explore questions these encounters opened up: how thought shapes what we see, how imagination transforms an observation, and how an image can lead beyond what we think we know. Figures, gestures and everyday incidents mingle with humor and mythic associations, moving between close observation and the unexpected turns of the image itself. Through drawing, seeing became a form of questioning, allowing the images to complicate whatever answers I thought I had.
The selection concludes with artwork created for Yogavataranam: The Translation of Yoga, a Sanskrit textbook first published by North Point Press in 2015, extending these interests into a dialogue between painting and language.
